چکیده

Marketing has a tradition in conducting scientific research with cutting-edge techniques developed in management science, such as data envelopment analysis (DEA) (Charnes et al. 1985). Two decades ago, Kamakura, Ratchford, and Agrawal (1988) applied DEA to examine market efficiency and consumer welfare loss. In this review of three new books, my purpose is (1) to provide a background of DEA for marketing scholars and executives and (2) to motivate them with exciting DEA advances for marketing theory and practice. All three books provide brief descriptions of DEA’s history, origin, and basic models. For beginners, Ramanathan’s work, An Introduction to Data Envelopment Analysis, is a good source, offering basic concepts of DEA’s efficiency and programming formulations in a straightforward manner (with some illustrations) in the first three chapters. A unique feature of this book is that it dedicates a chapter to discussing as many as 11 DEA computer software programs and explaining some noncommercial DEA packages that are available free on the Internet for academic purposes. As Ramanathan states (p. 111), “[I]n this computer era, it is important that any management science technique has adequate software support so that potential users are encouraged to use it. Software harnesses the computing power of [personal computers] for use in practical decision-making situations. It can also expedite the implementation of a method.” EDITOR: Naveen Donthu

Applying Network Data Envelopment Analysis to Determine a Criterion for Benchmarking in Regional Electricity Companies of Iran.

One of the effective methods for improving the efficiency of an organization is benchmarking against successful organizations. Not only benchmarking could be a technique for identifying problems but also it greatly helps managers in relations of the design of processes. Among strategic and infrastructure industries in each country, the electricity industry is one of the most important and criti...

Data envelopment analysis in service quality evaluation: an empirical study

Service quality is often conceptualized as the comparison between service expectations and the actual performance perceptions. It enhances customer satisfaction, decreases customer defection, and promotes customer loyalty. Substantial literature has examined the concept of service quality, its dimensions, and measurement methods. We introduce the perceived service quality index (PSQI) as a sing...

Efficiency evaluation of wheat farming: a network data envelopment analysis approach

Traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models deal with measurement of relative efficiency of decision making units (DMUs) in which multiple-inputs consumed to produce multiple-outputs. One of the drawbacks of these models is neglecting internal processes of each system, which may have intermediate products and/or independent inputs and/or outputs. In this paper some methods which are usab...

Performance evaluation of Iran universities with Stochastic Data Envelopment Analysis (SDEA)

Performance evaluation of universities is an important issue between researchers. Classic data envelopment analysis (DEA) models with deterministic data have been used by many authors to measure efficiency of universities in different countries. However, DEA with stochastic data are, rarely used to measure efficiency of universities. In this paper, input oriented model in stochastic data env...
